Grocery Store Chaos

Grocery Store Chaos

One of my most dreaded tasks each week is grocery store shopping (who’s with me on this?).  This time of year grocery shopping can take forever as most wives and mothers (including me) try desperately to start better habits of cooking for our families.  The aisles and even checkout lines get packed.  I think some of these stores have added the jewelry and clothes as a way to make it seem better but when I’m in there all I can think about is getting out as fast as I can.  Unless I see a friend, and then I might chat a minute or two or ten.

But what can make or break any grocery store visit is a list.  Without a list, I seemingly wander the aisles hoping for inspiration of what to cook for dinner, hoping to make some healthy choices, trying to remember what was in the pantry, going back and forth searching for the right ingredients.  It really feels like chaos.  Please tell me I’m not the only one who sometimes poorly plans for these visits.

But when I have thoughtfully prepared and planned beforehand for this task and come armed with a list, I have a real sense of purpose, I’m on task, I’m marking items off as I go, and although I might go rogue on a few items (ice cream, maybe), for the most part I’m focused.  I might even have a coupon or two (doubt it).  But you get it.  This way is so much better!

This grocery store reflection made me think how this applies to the time that I spend with the Lord each day.  When I make time for Him, He gives me a real sense of purpose, He keeps me focused, He helps me make good decisions (which may not include the ice cream), and even gives me a sense of joy going through the good and bad aisles of life.  And just as seeing a friendly face in the store can make any visit better, having my forever friend by my side makes this life worth living.

My prayer is that we would invite Christ into our lives each and every day.  That we would have a deep desire to spend time with Him in prayer, in studying His Word, in worshiping, in listening for His precious voice.  That we would allow Him to plan our days and guide our ways.

His way is so much better!

See you in the checkout line,

Seek Him With All Your Heart

Seek Him With All Your Heart

I have loved reading the story of Anna. She was the one we can read about in the book of Luke who was able to see Jesus when Mary and Joseph brought him to the temple. Other than the fact that I’m crazy about her name (and the life she lived), here’s what we know of her. She was “advanced in years” and she was a widow. That actually sounds completely depressing. Seems like time and circumstances were working against her, right? And yet even in her age she never gave up hope. And even though her life was one touched by sorrow, she didn’t become bitter.

What was her secret, we might ask, in finding the strength to move beyond these challenges in life, to not let disappointment and discouragement cloud her days? Because I don’t know about you but I seem to face challenges and difficulties some days that seemingly stop me in my tracks. And although, I’m definitely “advancing in years” (aren’t we all?), Anna’s struggles are much deeper than the ones I usually run up against.

So what can we learn from Anna’s blessed life? Her secret is simple – she spent time with the Lord daily. Yep, that’s it. She spent time in the temple. She worshipped. She prayed. She basked in His presence. She sought after His wisdom and God called her to share that wisdom. I’m sure He even gave her a real passion for sharing with those He placed in her path. She became obedient to His calling. And He made her stronger. He allowed her to see way past temporary discomfort in this life and instead to keep her eyes ever focused upward. And in her normal every day life of worshipping, she was able to see with her own eyes the very hope of Jesus.

Can you imagine how she must have felt that day in the temple seeing in human form the hope of all mankind? Each and every day Anna sought Christ with her whole heart. And when we seek Him in that humble and committed way, we will find Him.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” ~ Jeremiah 29:13

My prayer is that we draw from the simple obedience of Anna’s life. The one simple thing that changed her life of allowing our Savior to transform her heart. May we have a heart desire to spend time with Him each day. May we lay down our disappointments at His feet. May we walk in obedience to His calling. May we have a passion for sharing with others what His love has meant in our lives. And most of all, may we always seek Him with all of our hearts.

Encourage and Build Up

Encourage and Build Up

There’s an older gentleman that I see out most mornings while I’m running. He’s running too and actually is quite a bit faster than me (but that’s not really the point here). I usually see him a couple of times on my route. The first time he says “Good Morning” and the second time he says “Have a Great Day”. He even manages to have enthusiasm in his voice even though it’s very early in the day and let’s not forget – he’s running. This has come to be such a boost to my mornings. A few simple words. A smile. A friendly voice. It all adds up to encouragement.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Paul’s writings in scripture always included many words of encouragement. Regardless of his own circumstances and challenges (many times writing from a prison cell), he genuinely cared about others and wanted to build them up in Christ. He was able to see others through Christ’s eyes rather than his own. And he understood that Christ followers would need support. Our gracious heavenly Father knows we need it to. He understands that we face struggles, challenges, and disappointment. Life can be hard. And yet a little encouragement can make all the difference in our lives and the lives of others.

You and I have an amazing opportunity to be encouragers. We can offer a kind word, a smile, a friendly voice. Maybe it’s taking the time to really listen and reflect genuine compassion. Perhaps it is lifting someone up in prayer. Or just a simple act of service. Friends, this is kingdom work in its simplest form! And all the while we find ourselves being an encourager for others, it can’t help but lift our own spirits in the process. Christ is just really great that way. We can never out-give Him.

My prayer is that we always see others through Christ’s eyes. That we look for the very best in everyone. And that regardless of our circumstances, we are always an encourager to those He places in our paths.

When the Road Seems Rough

When the Road Seems Rough

This week has been a tough one just filled to the brim with challenges. We all have those kind of weeks at times when the road seems rough, right? Well, it has seemed as though several areas of my life all came together and decided things weren’t going to work out smoothly. I felt like I was doing what God had called me to do in these areas to the best of my abilities and yet… I wasn’t seeing the results that I expected. Surely, when we are walking Christ’s path, the pathway is smooth, right? Not exactly.

Christ doesn’t promise a snag free life when we choose to follow Him. In fact, He tells us to consider it pure joy when our faith is tested because it produces perseverance. That verse (found in James 1:2-3) is a hard one to grasp at times because it just doesn’t seem fair. And what’s the point of following a Savior that doesn’t protect me from each pothole or roadblock?

While I was in the middle of this challenging week and feeling a little low from reflecting on all this, Christ brought me to a scripture I had read before but it took on a greater meaning. I’m so grateful for how He speaks to each of us directly through scripture. The scripture was “Never tire of doing what is right.” ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13. That verse has played over and over in my head since I read it.

Our day to day comfort and ease is really not Christ’s highest priority for our lives. He isn’t always calling us to the easy path, but here’s the great news! The struggles that come along in that path are the type that help us grow closer to Him, to trust more in Him, to surrender ourselves more fully to Him. For in our weakness, He is strong. Those struggles not only produce perseverance but help us to look more and more like Christ. He is molding us and reforming us each day when we yield to His guidance.

And although our challenges may not always turn out with the results we were hoping for, scripture tells us to “fix our eyes not on what is seen but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal”. Sometimes we have to let go of our temporary discomforts and know without a doubt that Christ is working on us, He will never forsake us, and there are greater days ahead (and that is a promise).

Perhaps you find yourself dealing with some roughness in the road this week as well. My prayer is that we seek His face each day, that we grow through the potholes and curves that come our direction, and that more than anything we keep our focus centered on Him. May we NEVER tire of doing what is right.

Happy Friday!
